What is Matrix? Types of Matrix with Examples

Matrix is one of the most important concepts in Engineering Mathematics, especially for students preparing for competitive exams like GATE, BARC, ISRO, and other technical exams. Matrices are widely used in solving systems of equations, computer graphics, machine learning, electrical networks, and many engineering applications.

What is a Matrix?

A Matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers, symbols, or expressions arranged in rows and columns. These numbers are called the elements of the matrix.

Example:

2 4 6
1 3 5

In this matrix:

Hence, it is called a 2 × 3 matrix.

Order of a Matrix

The order of a matrix is defined as the number of rows and columns present in it.

If a matrix has m rows and n columns, then its order is written as m × n.

Example:

1 2
3 4
5 6

This matrix has:

So its order is 3 × 2.

Types of Matrix

1. Row Matrix

A matrix that contains only one row is called a Row Matrix.

2 5 7 9

Order: 1 × 4

2. Column Matrix

A matrix that contains only one column is called a Column Matrix.

3
6
8

Order: 3 × 1

3. Square Matrix

A matrix in which the number of rows is equal to the number of columns is called a Square Matrix.

1 2
3 4

This is a 2 × 2 square matrix.

4. Zero Matrix

A matrix in which all elements are zero is called a Zero Matrix (or Null Matrix).

0 0
0 0

5. Diagonal Matrix

A square matrix in which all elements except the main diagonal are zero is called a Diagonal Matrix.

3 0 0
0 5 0
0 0 7

6. Identity Matrix

A square matrix in which all diagonal elements are 1 and remaining elements are 0 is called an Identity Matrix.

1 0 0
0 1 0
0 0 1

7. Scalar Matrix

A diagonal matrix in which all diagonal elements are equal is called a Scalar Matrix.

4 0 0
0 4 0
0 0 4

Applications of Matrix

Conclusion

Matrix is a fundamental concept in mathematics and engineering. Understanding different types of matrices helps students solve complex mathematical problems efficiently. For competitive exams like GATE, strong fundamentals in Engineering Mathematics including matrices are extremely important.
