Percentage means "per hundred". It is represented by the symbol %.
Formula:
Percentage = (Value / Total Value) × 100
If a student scores 45 out of 60:
Percentage = (45/60) × 100 = 75%
A number is increased by 20% and then decreased by 20%. What is the net change?
Solution:
Net Change = 20 − 20 − (20×20)/100 = −4%
Answer: 4% decrease
If the price of a product increases by 25%, by what percentage should consumption be reduced to keep expenditure constant?
Solution:
Required reduction = [x / (100 + x)] × 100
= (25 / 125) × 100 = 20%
Answer: 20% decrease
In an exam, 60% students passed. If 240 students passed, find total number of students.
Solution:
60% = 240
Total = 240 × (100/60) = 400
Answer: 400 students
